In 1830, a kiln was built to produce china and porcelain on the ancient site of the San No Maru building of Tsukasaki Castle (the Takeo Nabeshima family residence) which is currently Takeo Senior High School’s library. Nowadays, lion ornaments, painted vases and dishes can still be seen. This kiln was actively used for adapting Western technologies such as alembic stills (used for distilling chemicals). This kiln was also used for researching and producing glass. Additionally, the kiln was used to produce the fire resistant bricks necessary to build a reverberatory furnace which is needed for cannon casting.
So, Tsukasaki castle was an institute of physical and chemical research.
