Celestial Observation and Measuring the Earth
Equipment for Measurement and Telescopes in Takeo

After the 18th century, the demand for surveying skills increased. The development of new rice fields and the promotion of industry both required skilled surveyors. In the 19th century, new technology was required to meet the needs of the coastal defenses as well.
As a part of gunnery training, soldiers in Takeo needed to learn to measure the range and elevation of a target in addition to observing the conditions of the impact area.
In order to protect Nagasaki harbor, Saga domain needed to create detailed maps of the harbor area, build gun batteries and strengthen the monitoring of the bay area. In order to do so, Takeo bought precise Western measuring implements and telescopes.
