The Beginning of Western Gunnery
- The Gunnery of Takeo - Shuhan Takashima

In 1833, the lord of Takeo, Shigeyoshi Nabeshima, sent one of his vassals, Jyunzaemon Hirayama, to train under Shuhan Takashima. After two years, Shigeyoshi Nabeshima went to train under Shuhan Takashima as well.
The Takashima family held a position called “Town Elder” in Nagasaki for many generations. Shuhan’s father, Shiroubei, was in charge of the gun battery on Dejima Island in 1807. Shuhan often visited the Dutch factory on Dejima as an elder and researched gunnery. Shuhan played a major role in the development of cannon casting and gunnery in Takeo.
