Technological Achievement Part 1
Cannon Casting in Takeo

Shigeyoshi Nabeshima also worked on cannon casting. According to Takeo Nabeshima family documents, the family operated a foundry for casting cannons and cannonballs in April of 1836. In addition, the Confucian scholar of Takeo, Ryumon Shimizu, states in his diary that Shigeyoshi Nabeshima asked for his advice on how to make a document on cannon making. It is assumed that Western style cannons were already being produced at that time in Takeo. The site of the foundry was located within the Ni No Maru building of Tsukasaki Castle (currently Takeo Senior High School).
