After the Nara period, Japan’s glass production ceased for a long time. From the 17th century, production of glass restarted. At the end of the Edo period, research and development of practical glassmaking began in order to accurately investigate chemistry and physics. Glass is necessary for research in chemistry and physics because it is not greatly affected by heat and chemicals.
According to his diary, Ryumon Shimizu saw the production of a vidro (a Portuguese toy instrument made of glass) on his way back from Takeo shrine in November of 1836. Therefore, production of glass in Takeo must have already started by that time.
